About

about me.

Hi my name's Jessica and I'm the owner of J Laser Beauty. I started JLB when I was 22 & years later I still love what I do.

Before venturing into my own business I took the traditional route of going to university, studying for a degree in marketing, and working for a few startups before deciding it wasn't for me.

I enjoy making people feel confident and comfortable in their own skin. Laser hair removal has been a game changer for me as it's given me the confidence to wear what I want without having to worry about hair and has saved me a lot of time and money in the long run.  I can honestly say it's worked for me and my clients.

I love my job, it's definitely a rewarding one.

About Laser Hair Removal

Laser Hair Removal – What is it?

Laser Hair Removal – What is it?

In simple terms laser hair removal is an intense beam of pure light which passes safely through the upper layers of the skin and targets the colour (melanin) in the hair follicle. This process, called selective photothermolysis, causes the follicle to heat up, cauterizing the blood vessel feeding the follicle, which disables or destroys it, preventing further hair growth.

J Laser Beauty uses a Long Pulsed Nd: YAG 1064nm Laser which is currently the only laser on the market with the longest wavelength which successfully targets the melanin in the hair follicle with minimal absorption in the skin. Due to the low skin absorption, the Nd:YAG 1064nm laser is brilliant for all skin types ( I-VI) due to the lasers ability to produce a wavelength that only affects the hair follicle. This particular laser is considered ‘Gold Standard’ for skin types IV-VI due to the low skin absorption.

The Difference between Laser & IPL

The Difference between Laser & IPL

When selecting the correct hair removal treatment for you it is important to know the difference between Laser and Intense Pulsed Light, also known as IPL. Unlike the Nd:YAG 1064nm laser, IPL does not penetrate the skin deep enough to effectively kill the hair growth. Although this may slow the hair growth down the results are usually temporary and short lived with more treatments needed in comparison to laser hair removal. Less treatment sessions are needed with laser hair removal than IPL with usually only 6-8 sessions needed to successfully treat the area. IPL usually requires 10+ sessions with ongoing top ups needed.

Many people find IPL more painful than laser and this is because the melanin absorption of IPL is much higher than that of laser. Due to the IPL’s lack of ability to specifically target the hair, more light is absorbed into the dermis which heats up the skin causing more pain and irritation. This means that skin types IV-VI are at higher risks of burns, hyper/hypopigmentation and blistering.

The Long Pulsed Nd:YAG laser comes with a specialist skin cooling system which counteracts the build-up of heat in the skin. A cold air blower allows for a safe treatment and patient comfort, especially in sensitive areas. In the case of IPL cold gel is used which is less effective in cooling the skin and tends to be messy and more time consuming.

Before Treatment Advice

Before Treatment Advice

1. Avoid the sun 4-6 weeks before and after treatment.

2. You MUST avoid bleaching, plucking or waxing hair for 6 weeks prior to treatment.

3. Do not use Depilatory creams 1 week prior to treatment.

4. If have had a history of cold sores, zovirax may be used prior to treatment and continued one week after treatment.

5. TANNED SKIN CAN NOT BE TREATED! If treated, you may get hypopigmentation (white spots) and this may not clear for 2-3 months or more.  Also, the use of tanning cream must be discontinued two week before treatment.

6. Please shave the area the day before or the morning before the treatments.

Aftercare Advice

1. Immediately after treatment, there may be redness and swelling at the treatment area, this may feel like mild sunburn.

2. The application of iced water during the first few hours after treatment will reduce any discomfort.

3. The application of aloe vera gel can continue at home.

4. Makeup may be used immediately after the treatment unless there is epidermal blistering.

5. Avoid sun exposure to reduce the chance of hyperpigmentation or darker pigmentation. Use sunscreen SPF 30 or greater at all times throughout the course of treatment.

6. Avoid picking or scratching the treated skin.  Do not use any other hair removal treatment methods (waxing, electrolysis or tweezing) that will disturb the hair follicle at the treatment area for 4-6 weeks after treatment.  Shaving or depilatories may be used.

7. Hair regrowth occurs at different rates on different areas of the body.  New hair growth will not occur for AT LEAST three weeks after treatment.

8. Anywhere from 5-19 days after the treatment, shedding of the surface hair may occur and this appears as new hair growth.  This is NOT new hair growth.  You can clean and remove the hair by washing or wiping the area with a wet cloth or Loofa sponge.

9. Avoid hot baths and heat treatments and treat the skin gently, as if you had sunburn, for the first 24 hours.
